    Competent, somewhat muddled

This is an imaginative and original premise, with a rollicking carry-along style. Our protagonist is a sympathetic, complex, somewhat tortured character whose life-choices crowd into his inner life with distracting effect. His journey to vindication is woven into a patchwork of romantic insecurity, Cold War conspiracy, journalistic zeal and local corruption. I enjoyed finishing it. My criticisms lie mainly in the abundance of ideas, which - in the denouement - risked unsettling the dramatic climax. You can tire of clever twists. Recommended.
