    Magnnificent!

I cannot recommend or rave about this book enough. A masterpiece and a brilliantly human history of the Railway Tragedy. Engaging and heart wrenching - this book has wormed its way into my list of favourites.

THE NARROW ROAD TO THE DEEP NORTH

Beautfuly written, harrowing account of the Australian Pow's slaving under brutal Japanese captors to build the Burma railway---mixed in with a story of unrequited love and miscellany of portraits of human relationships. The last section of the novel set post-war is a bit anti-climactic, but serves to tie up loose ends. Worthy of a Booker.

A Narrow Truth to a Deep Read

A bit slow to start and certainly a long and at times difficult passage to read in the POW camps but worth the effort. The authors greatness is in his exploring humanity by stripping it away from the characters as they live through the Japanese POW camps and return home to try to find and rebuild their humanity. A study in what it means to love and what life is. Definitely deserving the Man Booker. I will read more by the author.

    Waste of time

I just couldn't do it. Wasted 5 nlghts of my life on this book. Had to give up due to the risk of dying of boredom. A very good sedative, nonetheless. Can't understand all the rave reviews.
