舞台は京都、八坂神社の境内菖蒲は相思相愛の恋人鮎之介がいるにもかかわらず、父親権左衛門が財産のある蝉丸との結婚を迫る。菖蒲は気が遠くなって鮎之介の姿絵を手から落とす。通りがかりの山勘に召使が助けを求めると、介抱している姿を山勘の妻が見咎めて浮気を疑う。妻は菖蒲が落として行った姿絵を拾い上げ、ためつすがめつ見るのを山勘が浮気と疑う。お互いに浮気を疑う夫婦である。旅から帰った鮎之介は、菖蒲が他の男と結婚するという噂に動揺する。山勘は姿絵と鮎之介とを見比べながら女房の浮気相手と邪推し、鮎之介は山勘を菖蒲の新郎と勘違いする。この勘違いが最後まで山勘を苦しめ、鮎之介を悩ませるが、最後には意外な結末が待っている。一幕ものにしては込み入った筋立てで見ごたえのある喜劇となっている。
