I came upon a reference to this book at The Cruising Association in London's Limehouse. It was in a pilot for the Red Sea and it has taken me four years to track down this electronic version as I had forgotten the author and title's name. It was however worth the wait. This is a fantastic adventure yarn with entertaining anecdotes and descriptions of natural occurrences that are often as beautiful as they are mysterious. Monfried is an elegant writer and possessed of a wisdom that is Oriental, even if he is a modern man. You learn much of the way of an Arabia which is probably still there even while he writes of it as it was eighty years. I imagine it now from Aden past Eritrea and Yemen and on to Egypt as simply a little buried under the desert sun, a place of secrets and wilderness unbouned, even now. He writes of a time past before World War II that is accessible and human, full of conceit but also of courage and nobleness where disaster is never far off, but kept at bay, just. A very warm story teller, illuminating an incredible world, which he strode in the best tradition of Sinbad the Sailor; utterly captivating.
