    A treat for book lovers

Dianna Athill hilariously retells the life and times of a British editor (mainly herself) in the 1940s and 50s. The first part of the book details the inception and fate of the publisher André Deutsch. Interesting personalities pop off the page. Athill reflects upon the publisher's problems and awkward situations with a crisp, gossipy tone. The second part of the book expands on what we already learned about Diana's experiences to tell us about the authors she fostered close friendships with and the endings of those friendships. Jean Rhys, Philip Roth, Mordecai Richler, Norman Mailer, V.S. Naipaul, and even George Orwell's second wife make an appearance. What is refreshing about Diana is that she is does not hold back in criticizing old friends and acquaintances where criticism is due. I guess in modern terms you would call that "spunky". Book lovers and publishing crew will love this book for its frankness, hilarity, and devotion to the art of words. Get the audiobook too!
