  • Not As Hot As Expected

Jim Al-Khalili has ventured into fiction, well it was a good read although I expected better. The Science within this book is excellent and I found it extremely interesting as I usually do. I hope to will be around to see Dark Matter found as at has been in this story. The characters are pretty good but it is a character that lets the story down for me, I knew who the baddie was as soon as they are introduced and this for me made me lose interest a little. I would say give it a read it is definitely worth it if only for the science within the story, Jim has done a fine job considering it is his first novel. I have Jim's non-fiction books and I do listen to his radio interviews, Jim himself is a great scientist and this shows within his novel.

  • Sunfall

Truly amazing, completely enthralling and I had great difficulty putting it down. The scientific substance was beautifully told so us lesser knowledgeable mortals could understand it. I know it's fiction but, just maybe, it could be a possible scenario in the future .

  • Plausible and sobering

Textbook writing. Won’t win the Nobel for literature. But an interesting and well paced read. The subject is science fiction of course...or is it? Could this really be where the earth and her inhabitants are headed if we don’t listen to Greta and the Fridays for future movements around the world? Here again, man plays god thanks to science...but this time for a good cause

  • Good-ish

Reasonable first effort at science fiction. He knows his stuff but..hey Jim..don't give up your day job just yet. I do wish people would stop including aviation stuff in their novels unless they really know about flying. As a pilot perhaps I'm a bit oversensitive...

  • Good science, clunky story

I'm aware this is a first work of fiction by the author and taking that into account it's not bad. I struggled to finish but I would consider reading the next one. The love story was unnecessary and uncomfortable, there were a few style issues with the prose in general. Things like something very obvious happening in a scene then being told it just happened, the last words scene sticks out like a sore thumb in my memory there but there were others. Also a shame about the anti Irish bias which seems pervasive throughout all British scifi these days. I expect the author didn't even realise.
