    A disappointing and disturbing read

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend whose opinions I value. From the beginning of the book, however, I questioned the parallel story of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, fictional characters, and how they related to Laurel's story. Reviews which I read indicated that there was a "twist" at the end so I persevered through the book. While the ending is definitely a "twist", I was not wholly surprised by it because by midway through the book I was suspicious of the whole premise. I read a great deal and when I am engaged in a book I read it quickly and voraciously. My interest in this book lagged, and it actually took me a week to read it - a very long time for me to complete a novel and indicative, I think, of my disinterest in the whole story, which at times was interesting, but at most times I felt it was preposterous. Sadly, for me, this was a very disappointing read.
