Epic novel by a new Canadian talent

This is a special read...a thoughtful, carefully-written book, about an Austrian Jewish family during the years between the end of World War I until after World War II. It is told from the perspective of one man, whose relationship with a Nazi becomes the focus of an exploration of issues about Jewish attitudes in a country creeping towards, then galloping into what became the annihilation of most of the Jews of Austria. Although written about the Holocaust period, it avoids the ghastly details of the horrors that took place, instead dealing with the relationships between the well-drawn cast of characters. The language of the book stands out as poetic, lively, achingly beautiful...reminiscent of Anne Michaels in its superb descriptions and imagery. A young Canadian author from whom we will hear much more.

    Loving story of horrific times

An interesting tale about a man filled with a tenderness more ascribable to a female. The overwhelming trust is a passionate cry for humanity to be humane and I found myself hoping for gentle solutions and moral lessons.

    Good book

It's a good story. I feel there could have been more character development. It was an interesting take on the horrors of WWII and how they affected each side.

    Enjoyably detailed and written.

The beginning of the novel captured the joys and difficulties of telling a story. Josef’s need to tell the reader details about each character and place touched my imagination. I enjoyed how the story evolved.
