Epic novel by a new Canadian talent

This is a special read...a thoughtful, carefully-written book, about an Austrian Jewish family during the years between the end of World War I until after World War II. It is told from the perspective of one man, whose relationship with a Nazi becomes the focus of an exploration of issues about Jewish attitudes in a country creeping towards, then galloping into what became the annihilation of most of the Jews of Austria. Although written about the Holocaust period, it avoids the ghastly details of the horrors that took place, instead dealing with the relationships between the well-drawn cast of characters. The language of the book stands out as poetic, lively, achingly beautiful...reminiscent of Anne Michaels in its superb descriptions and imagery. A young Canadian author from whom we will hear much more.

    Interesting

Couldn't get into the story at first, as it seemed disjointed. However, I stuck with it and started to really enjoy the book and the author's style. Interesting content for sure as I always enjoy anything about the Jewish people and their struggles and accomplishments, especially as it relates to the war years.

    the ghost keeper

great read. Shows the holocaust through one mans eyes, and the humanity and inhumanity of the species known as human. writing style is easy to fallow.
