Stan and Little Red Tractor have been helping Mr. Jones with the potato harvest of Beech Farm, but the work gives Stan a backache. The following day, they harvest the potatoes on Gosling Farm, but it is not until the last potato is lifted, that "Puppy" finds the cause of Stan's backache and his own name.

It's a cold, icy morning. A fox is on the prowl and Stan needs more crushed barley to feed the cows. Dudley the postman is finding it difficult to drive on the slippery roads, so Stan offers to take Mrs. Turvey's letters across the fields in Little Red Tractor for him.
