  • The Pattern Ship

I enjoyed the book for its fanciful depiction of a matinee spaceman on a backwards planet. The inclusion of the good hearted human, initially just a source of material but eventually an aid to the enterprise was a interesting hook. The whole book reminded me of Tom Swift novels but without the huge facts of prejudice and two dimensional characters.

  • Perfect for teenage readers

Great story idea told simply. Sometimes too simple for this reader but still entertaining. With more depth and better characterisation it would be a great read.

  • OK, but not a page turner.

I really liked the premise, and the long plot cycle seems interesting, but I can't see myself picking up the rest of the series. The characters are very one dimensional, especially whem any non-American human is portrayed as either a violent murderous sociopath, or a corrupt criminal murderous sociopath. The plot argues for global inclusion, them excludes all other nations in favour of Americans running the show. That was the hardest plot point to dismiss, but almost every character is similarly simple. Good guy is good because he's good. Bad guys are irredeemably bad, because they're bad people. No real nuance or depth. I didn't dislike the book, but it didn't make me want to buy the series either.

  • Pattern story

While the book starts off well it degenerates into a poor sci-fi jingolistic, the US is is all things great and good, story.
