A mining town in the Canadian west: an owner, a union organiser, a strike, and a young minister who thinks he can stand between them and is told by both sides to choose. Connor was Charles Gordon, a Presbyterian minister who worked the camps and ranches himself, and who chaired a real conciliation board; the labour dispute here is written by a man who sat in those rooms.

A young minister with no gift for preaching is sent to the foothills of the Rockies, where the ranchers call him the Sky Pilot and treat him as a joke — until a girl is thrown from a horse. Connor was Charles Gordon, a Presbyterian minister who worked these camps himself; his books sold in the millions and paid for missions, and the men in them talk exactly as he had heard them talk.

Two boys grow up in the same Ontario town, love the same girl, and meet again in a mining camp in the Rockies where one of them is the only doctor for a hundred miles. Charles Gordon wrote as Ralph Connor and knew the country first-hand: he was a Presbyterian missionary among exactly these camps, and his books sold in millions to readers who had never seen a mountain.
