  • Thoughtful detective fiction

Eliot Pattison's Inspector Shan series work on the premis of detective fiction - a crime must be solved - but the background story is always about the Chinese presence in Tibet. The 'who done its' are used to expose one of the worst examples of cultural and physical genocide. Shan the character is a driven figure in the tradition of much modern fiction. What hero today does not have deep flaws, deeper wounds and hides a dark secret from their past? But it is the story of Tibet, its people and its majestic scenery which is the real hero of this series. Highly recommended for the reader who demands more from fiction that a mindless diversion.
