  • deal escapism for the current climate

I’ve not read any westerns before, (all my understanding of America at this time comes from childhood Bonanza and lego games Back To The Future!) so this was a departure from my usual genres. I’d not have bought it, but having read all DV Berkom’s other books I knew this would be an interesting read. I also know from her mailing list that she does proper research, so I really enjoyed the little period details that settle it so well into time and place. Location details are always one of this author’s strengths and she was able to evoke the 1880s extremely convincingly. The story has a couple of twists to it. I began thinking that the plot was a departure from the author’s signature style and, was a little concerned about the direction that was taking, until I hit page 10 at which point I relaxed, settled back and relished the ride. Ideal escapism for the current climate, I’m very hopeful that Claire Whitcomb will be back, and also that as the character develops that I’ll learn more about this period in America’s history as the detailing slips into my mind through gentle osmosis

  • Bold new series...

Saddle up for a bold new series from D. V. Berkom. Retribution introduces us to an amazing new character, Claire Whitcomb. She is forced to abandon her conventional role as a frontier wife and mother when the unthinkable happens and she finds herself alone and accused of the murder of her entire family. Unable to convince the deputies that she is innocent, she chooses to flee and become a fugitive. She finds some unlikely allies and acquires new skills that set her on the path to finding out who is responsible for the massacre of her family. I had some reservations about this book as I do not generally read westerns but I was captivated from start to finish and I truly enjoyed witnessing Claire’s transformation as she trades in her skirt for dungarees and morphs from a traditional frontierswoman to a gun-toting, mission-oriented vehicle of vengeance. This novella-length introduction to Claire Whitcomb has certainly got me looking forward to the next installment of this new western adventure series.

  • A Must Read

Since I enjoy a variety of genres, I was excited to read DV Berkom’s newest book set in 1880 Colorado. Retribution is a fast paced and action pact story with unlikely twists. It is an ending of one dream and beginning of a new adventure The heroine was everything I could imagine. She was dependent upon her husband and made the harsh move to an uncivilized part of the country to follow her husband’s dream. When tragedy changes her circumstances, Claire is forced to draw upon her inner strengths. With help Claire develop abilities to continue to live on her own in Colorado. A fantastic adventure and beginning of the new Claire Whitcomb Western series by DV Berkom. A must read!

  • A western thriller

Claire Whitcomb and her family are attacked by what appears to be Indians. These men kill her husband and her 3 children. She shoots one of the men and discovers they are dressed up like Indians. Claire goes to town to report this and when the sheriff comes to the house the body is gone. Claire becomes the lead suspect. Claire wants to find the men who did this and clear her name. Action and suspense in the conclusion to this novel.

  • Outstanding

Retribution - wow. Great read. Completed my previous book at 10pm, thought I'll have a quick glance. 2.5 hours later all read. Drew me right in. A great start to a series.🥳 I'm not much of a western fan but this one has plus factors, the major one being great writer. I can't imagine anyone not liking this book.
