Goethe's Faust reworks the late-medieval myth of Dr Faust, a brilliant scholar so disillusioned he resolves to make a contract or wager with the devil, Mephistopheles. The devil will do all he asks on Earth and seek to grant him a moment in life so glorious that he will wish it to last for ever. But if Faust does bid the moment stay, he falls to Mephisto and must serve him after death. In this first part of Goethe's great work the embittered thinker and Mephistopheles enter into their agre...

What is ‘European Angst’? Is it the extension of ‘German Angst’ to a whole continent? The latter term is often used disparagingly to describe the German tendency to problematise, weigh up and hesitate, especially when reasons for this seem slight and insignificant. But European Angst has nothing to do with stereotypical overscrupulousness. It is a mass of powerful emotions which transcend national borders and therefore seemed a fitting title for a conference which was to address disturbing...

'Shall I embrace you, must I let you go? Again you haunt me: come then, hold me fast!'Goethe viewed the writing of poetry as essentially autobiographical and the works selected in this volume represent over sixty years in the life of the poet. In early poems such as 'Prometheus' he rails against religion in an almost ecstatic fervour, while 'To the Moon' is an enigmatic meditation on the end of a love affair. The Roman Elegies show Goethe's use of Classical metres...

In this sequel to Faust, Mephistopheles takes Faust on a journey through ancient Greek mythology, conjuring for him the insurpassably beautiful Helen of Troy, as well as the classical gods. Faust falls in love with and marries Helen, embodying for Goethe his 'imaginative longing to join poetically the Romantic Medievalism of the germanic West to the classical genius of the Greeks'. Further to the themes of redemption and salvation in this great drama, are Goethe's eerie premonitio...

The play was late in breaking up: old Barbara went more than once to the window, and listened for the sound of carriages. She was waiting for Mariana, her pretty mistress, who had that night, in the afterpiece, been acting the part of a young officer, to the no small delight of the public. Barbara's impatience was greater than it used to be, when she had nothing but a frugal supper to present: on this occasion Mariana was to be surprised with a packet, which Norberg, a young and wealthy me...

"Why do I write?" is a question we ask ourselves every time we sit down at our desks, often without a clear answer. The author of this book confesses that he first picked up a pen simply because he loved the act of writing. He couldn't quite tell if what he was scribbling on the blank page was a diary, a novel, or a poem, but he admits that writing those unidentifiable words brought him a sense of peace.Over time, writing became a necessity - whether it was reports for school proje...

The Sorrow of Loving Too Much : It is always sad that more people do not read Goethe for pleasure alone. Yes, he was a scholarly writer but his works, although profound, are written in an easily understandable style. It could well be that many people have been needlessly scared off by Goethes monumental intelligence and his philosophy. This is too bad. His books revolve around themes that are universal, subjects to which all of us can relate: romantic love, nature, God, beauty.Eigh...

For two years, Mai Tran was the best-kept secret in Delano — and she told herself that was almost the same thing as being loved.Priest was everything a careful woman knows to stay away from: a senior officer in the Blackvein MC, married eight years to Renata, one half of the golden couple the whole club held up as proof that a hard life could still look respectable. What nobody held up — what nobody was allowed to see — was Mai. The side road. The one he came to when the respectable...

They called him Judge because he was the one who decided. When a brother wronged a brother, when a debt came due, when the club needed someone to weigh the ugly truth and hand down the verdict nobody else could stomach — Abel Hart sat in the seat and rendered it, cold and clean. He was good at it. He believed in it. And then the woman he loved stood accused in his own church, and he looked her in the eye, and he ruled her guilty. He knew she was innocent. That is the part Maeve Doran...

Talon cheated. Not an almost, not a maybe, not a line blurred in the dark — a real affair, four months of it, while his marriage went quiet around the grave of Juniper's father. He told himself the thing every coward tells himself: that they were already over. That the drift between them was a death, not a distance. So he wrote the ending of a twelve-year marriage in another woman's bed and didn't bother telling his wife the story was finished until she found the last page herself.J...
