Paleostress Inversion Techniques: Methods and Applications for Tectonics is an ideal reference for both academic and industry researchers in the Earth Sciences. The book introduces the methodologies developed to reconstruct (paleo) stress tensors from geological data. The interest and potential outcomes of the methods are illustrated by practical examples and supplementary electronic material and an overview on future research directions. As paleostress inversion methods are particularly u...

This book introduces the reader to the field of compressible turbulence and compressible turbulent flows across a broad speed range through a unique complimentary treatment of both the theoretical foundations and the measurement and analysis tools currently used. For the computation of turbulent compressible flows, current methods of averaging and filtering are presented so that the reader is exposed to a consistent development of applicable equation sets for both the mean or resolved fiel...

In addition to explaining and modeling unexplored phenomena in nature and society, chaos uses vital parts of nonlinear dynamical systems theory and established chaotic theory to open new frontiers and fields of study. Handbook of Applications of Chaos Theory covers the main parts of chaos theory along with various applications to diverse areas. Expert contributors from around the world show how chaos theory is used to model unexplored cases and stimulate new applications.

Novel techniques for modeling 3D cracks and their evolution in solids are presented. Cracks are modeled in terms of signed distance functions (level sets). Stress, strain and displacement field are determined using the extended finite elements method (X-FEM). Non-linear constitutive behavior for the crack tip region are developed within this framework to account for non-linear effect in crack propagation. Applications for static or dynamics case are provided.

With contributions from a number of pioneering researchers in the field, this collection is aimed not only at researchers and scientists in nonlinear dynamics but also at a broader audience interested in understanding and exploring how modern chaos theory has developed since the days of Poincaré.This book was motivated by and is an outcome of the CHAOS 2015 meeting held at the Henri Poincaré Institute in Paris, which provided a perfect opportunity to gain inspiration and discuss ne...
Multiscale Modeling of Heterogenous Materials
From Microstructure to Macro-Scale Properties

A material's various proprieties is based on its microscopic and nanoscale structures. This book provides an overview of recent advances in computational methods for linking phenomena in systems that span large ranges of time and spatial scales. Particular attention is given to predicting macroscopic properties based on subscale behaviors. Given the book’s extensive coverage of multi-scale methods for modeling both metallic and geologic materials, it will be an invaluable reading for gradu...

The rigorous mathematical theory of the equations of fluid dynamics has been a focus of intense activity in recent years. This volume is the product of a workshop held at the University of Warwick to consolidate, survey and further advance the subject. The Navier–Stokes equations feature prominently: the reader will find new results concerning feedback stabilisation, stretching and folding, and decay in norm of solutions to these fundamental equations of fluid motion. Other topics covered ...

This book deals with theoretical aspects of modelling the mechanical behaviour of manufacturing, processing, transportation or other systems in which the processed or supporting material is travelling through the system. Examples of such applications include paper making, transmission cables, band saws, printing presses, manufacturing of plastic films and sheets, and extrusion of aluminium foil, textiles and other materials. The work focuses on out-of-plane dynamics and stability an...
