These stories of old Conisbrough begin with the legend of the Holy Well in pre-Roman times and go on to include England's founding father, Hengest fighting his last battle at Maes Belli (near Mexborough), the siege of Conisbrough Castle in 1317 and Robin Hood in Barnsdale Forest.
