J. K. (Joanne) Rowling is the British author of the Harry Potter series of children's fantasy novels. The first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (published in the US as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) was released in 1997, and was written at a difficult time in Rowling's life during which her marriage ended and her mother died. The next three books in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire appeared annually through 2000. The final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was published in 2007.

From the sales of the Harry Potter books Rowling is widely-believed by Forbes magazine to be the wealthiest author in the world.

In 2011 Rowling launched Pottermore, a website providing canonical information about the Harry Potter universe, including the original 7 books, the movies based on the original books, as well as the Fantastic Beasts series of movies.

A play set in the Harry Potter universe, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, premiered in London I n2016 and went on to be staged internationally. It was a co-creation between Rowling, writer Jack Thorne, and director John Tiffany.

In 2012 Rowling published a book for adults, The Casual Vacancy, a dark comedy set in 19th- century rural Britain.

Since 2013, starting with The Cuckoo's Calling, Rowling has been writing the Cormoran Strike series of mystery novels under the pen name Robert Galbraith.Read moreRead less
