一、《洞冥記》一書，關聖帝為三期末劫，人心險惡，無術化導而頒也。世之善書，汗牛充棟，陳陳相因，人皆束之高閣，視為常談，故講者諄諄，而聽者藐藐，此通病也。聖帝有見於此，不得已而頒此書，已想到山窮水盡處，此書傳世，倘仍不能挽轉人心，更無書可頒也。閱是編者，須知 聖帝救世之苦心，然後許讀此書。二、是記命名：「洞冥」，言洞悉冥漠幽冥之事，即指天堂、地獄而言也。雖地府各獄，悉本於玉歷鈔傳，然玉歷僅說大概，未能若斯記之條分縷晰，詳且盡者。且五殿新增各獄，阿鼻側之孽僧獄，鐵圍城之憫死獄，及孝弟里、廉讓鄉、仙農境，為歷來遊冥生，未經道破。並他種事蹟，未經前人發表者，此記獨洩其祕，諸天仙佛，評此書，為古今勸善第一奇書，良有以也。三、《洞冥記》名目，西漢孝武帝時，曾有此書，然其書流傳未廣，世人罕得見之。此記發揮天人性命，仙凡鬼神之理，和盤托出，不稍隱諱，謂之「洞冥」，名稱其實。四、是書一言以蔽曰：「勸善懲惡」而已，上集歷陳地獄之苦情，懲惡也。下集備述天堂之樂趣，勸善也。一仙、一鬼，一升、一降，路分兩條，任人擇取。
