The story of a man and a woman

Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada, Gallery/Scout Press and NetGalley for providing me with an e-galley of Every Note Played by Lisa Genova in exchange for an honest review. This is the third novel, written by Lisa Genova, that I have read. She does not disappoint. With Every Note Played, the author of Still Alice and Left Neglected puts the reader inside the body and mind of a concert pianist stricken with ALS. Richard's talent has brought him devoted audiences from all over the world. Until the diagnosis of ALS. He is divorced from Karina due to lack of communication and his cheating with other women. It soon becomes evident that Richard cannot manage his illness while living alone and Karina moves him back to the family home that he left years before. What shines in this novel is the way the author presents this illness in such a sympathetic and detailed way. You will find yourself holding your breath when Richard has difficulty breathing and you will also experience the disease through Karina's eyes. This is not just the account of an illness. It is the story of a man and a woman. Highly recommended.

A very real, very moving tale

My cousin recently passed away from ALS so this book felt very personal to me, almost too personal. Much of the book is hard to read, but Lisa Genova's method of writing takes you inside the story and you become part of the struggle. Very well-developed characters, who you cheer for in spite of their flaws. I was very moved by this book.

    Excellent

Like all of her books, Lisa Genova created an informative and heartbreaking story about ALS. The book helps the reader to understand the human condition behind the disease. I really liked how she created an unlikeable main character and added the complication of who will care for him as the disease progresses. It begs the question, who really will be there for you when the chips are down?

    Excellent

Excellent, as are all of Lisa Genova's books. This story is fast paced and ends all too soon as does the disease and the life of the character in this book. My family carries the Huntington's gene, although I do not have it, and my partner suffered a catastrophic brain injury 9 years ago, so Lisa's books Left Neglected and Inside the O'Briens both resonated with me. I look forward to her next story.

    E very Note Played

This may well be simultaneously the most powerful and yet depressing book I have ever read. It is unflinching in portraying the misery of the long slide into death, and yet inspiring in the caring given to the dying person. I would recommend it to anyone who has ever been a caregiver.
