    A beginner's guide to England

Peter Ackroyd has a lively yet sober writing voice that navigates the reader through the history of England, and he touches upon the prehistory of Britain in a way that helps show the thread leading through English life from before recorded history up through the late Middle Ages - ending at the reign of Henry the VII. Throughout the narrative, he comes back to the theme of continuity in English life and behaviour. Ackroyd's tone blends serious research, digestible writing and irreverent wit: all is respected but nothing is sacred. I look forward to reading the other two volumes of the series.
