    Great Debut Novel!

I’m always eager to try new authors, and Karrie Roman’s Saved is a shining example of why! When the past of a man who is nearly agoraphobic from a serial killer’s kidnapping/torture becomes the present for his community once again in the form of a copycat killer, he needs 24/7 protection. When the lead detective on the case takes his first look at the lovely but tormented soul, his own soul dictates that he must offer more than just guarding a body. Will is six years out from the horror his life became, but even knowing his monster is physically dead, he is surviving but not particularly living. I instantly felt a connection to Will. The character’s background, personality, determination, and attitude just sucked me right in. Jack is rather a brusque man, as working in homicide can cause. He has a solid partner on the force (Kate) whom he trusts with his life, but he prefers being the one in control. I wasn’t certain right off the bat what I thought of him, because there was something niggling in the back of my brain that I couldn’t quite identify (I’ll get into that in a moment). This is a murder mystery/suspense/crime drama debut novel…quite a feat to accomplish. The premise is great, but there were a few aspects that definitely showed the author’s newness. Jack is a dedicated detective, yet a lot of the police aspects are skimmed over (this is the niggling I referenced), which in turn detracts from the character’s overall completeness. Also, taking a protectee out on dates quite seriously contradicts the whole “protection” thing that is supposed to be going on as the main portion of the book. I suspect that as the author continues to grow in her craft, things like these won’t be missed. The plot itself is quite rich, drawing the reader out of their mind and fully engaging in the book. Character interactions are dynamic, in turn evoking humor, compassion, anger, and many more emotions from the reader. There is a very slow burn romance aspect that is heart-meltingly sweet. It is here that Jack really shines. His instant attraction to Will allows him to move beyond his self-imposed boundaries to offer comfort and safety to a haunted man. The suspense aspect is actually fairly light despite the overall nature of the synopsis. In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I am hoping that a couple of the characters from this one make their way into their own story. I’m rating this at four stars, and I am looking forward to seeing what this author’s wonderful mind has for us in the future! I voluntarily read an ARC copy of this book for Divine Magazine from NineStar Press with no obligation to provide a review. **Same worded review will appear on Goodreads, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.**

4.5 One to Watch DEBUT Author Stars!

    > > Judging a Book by it's Cover < < In thumbnail size, the cover does not have a lot to catch your attention other than a few wisps of electric pink. The title is hard to read. If, for some chance, it does catch your eye and you click on it and see the larger version of the cover, you'll see a man bowed down with forehead resting on clasped hands. The title is now legible, but the font, color, or combination is not strong. Still, if it intrigues you enough to this point, the synopsis just may GRAB you. It sounds like a darker crime drama with romantic elements. > > Looking Deeper < < POV ~> Third person Setting ~> Australia - Moderate AU spelling and terminology. Six years ago, Will survived a serial killer's torturous captivity. Broken, physically and mentally, he still is not sure he'll ever fully recover from the ordeal, but he tries to live a decent life. But now, somehow, the monster is back... and it has it's eyes set on Will once again! Jack is a homicide detective. He never believed Will was an accomplice like some did and the media hinted at. "How else would he have survived?" they asked. When scouring the files, he sees nothing but a broken victim. Now he and his partner are tasked with finding and bringing in the man that's eluded them, having lived off-the-grid since being released from the hospital. There's a madman on the loose, determined to live up to his legacy. There's a detective that never believed that his job allowed for a loving relationship. There's a broken man with a fighter's spirit and a heart yearning to be "normal". It's a murder mystery, darker crime drama. Though the topics of content are dark, the details are not quite explicit - more like glossed over. The cast is rich and full without being overwhelming. Dialogue and interactions are spot-on. The dynamics and depth of the plot was spectacular and the story progressed fluidly. There were plenty of hurdles along the way, which were handled maturely. Predictability was minimal to nil. The conclusion is good; solid enough to be satisfying, though I'd hope to later maybe read more on Stuart and Kyle's story and maybe see Jack and Will in the background continuing theirs. I really enjoyed the structure and style of this author and since I'd not read anything by her before, I just went to see what else can be added to my TBR, but discovered this is her DEBUT BOOK!?!? Holy crap on toast, color me IMPRESSED! Karrie Roman is one to watch out for!! . Rating: [R] ~ Score: 4.475 ~ Stars: 4.5, if I could!!! ========================== ⭐ ⭐ **** Disclosure of Material: I received a copy of this book from IndiGo Marketing and the Author/Publisher with the hope that I would voluntarily leave unbiased and unsolicited feedback.
