  • Suspenseful and Satisfying

I’m always excited for another of Mizushima’s books featuring deputy Mattie Cobb and her canine partner, Robo, and this seventh in the series did not disappoint! Mattie continues to be a layered, complex, and likeable character. I’m enjoying seeing her love-interest relationship deepen, as well as her relationships with others in the town, in her family (both found and biological), and at work. I especially love the partnership she has with Robo. In this book, Mizushima pays us off, placing front-and-center the mystery related to Maddie’s family that’s been woven through multiple books in the series. There are lots of other mysteries and crises happening, too. Maddie is brilliant, keeping her cool, and using her skills to solve the mysteries, while remaining vulnerable and relatable. Mizushima does a masterful job of delivering clues and raising the tension, keeping me engaged and wondering what happens next. I found this installment in the series suspenseful and deeply satisfying. And I can’t wait for the next one!

  • K-9 Cop Kidnapped in Colorado (Good story!)

There's one cold case Deputy Mattie Cobb can't let go of; the murder of and accusations against her father, Douglas Wray. Her partner, K-9 German Shepherd Robo. Her ally from San Diego, Detective Jim Hauck. The backdrop; the wilds of Colorado. Mixed up in the mystery of the past is the kidnapping of Mattie and her family when she was a toddler. Two brothers, John and Harold Cobb (not related--with a somewhat confusing back-story) were the kidnappers back then. When Mattie and the detective go to interview JohnCobb in prison, there's a lockdown and murder inside! She knows in her bones that solving her father's murder is involved somehow, but the more they dig, the darker things become. Something is terribly wrong. A more recent trauma shadows and whispers to Mattie. She was kidnapped and nearly killed, and her brother was murdered. Right here on the mountain. And now a girl is missing. Local veterinarian and boyfriend of Deputy Mattie Cobb is Cole. Widowed father, patient, helpful, and supportive. Everything Mattie needs. Plus, he's a great asset in the mountains and while investigating. This story is a "clean" (with minor swearing) healthy mix of murder mystery, police investigation, K-9 handling, mountain adventure, exploration of personal trauma, and good people working together. There's poison somewhere, but stick with Mattie and you'll discover the truth. 5/5 Stars Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this great preview ebook! #NetGalley

  • tense

rural, Colorado, murder, murder-investigation, law-enforcement, drugs-issues, drug-trafficking, relationships, family, family-dynamics, friendship, thriller, suspense, procedural, K-9***** The first body is of a teenager recently delivered of a healthy baby who is missing. There's a blizzard in the mountains and it's hunting season. There are supposed hunters in town with possible ties to the dead girl. Then one of the deputies is run down, is concussed, and looks like both legs broken. This is a tense and suspenseful procedural. A really good read! I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thanks!

  • Striking Range

I really enjoy reading Ms. Mizushima’s novels both for the suspense and for her dog knowledge. When I get near the end I can’t stop reading until I’m finished.
