    An engaging read

This first instalment of Alan Johnson's autobiography begins in a world far removed from the heights of political power eventually scaled by the author. From a background of deprivation in the aftermath of the second world war, his early memories are recounted in a lively and readable style that made me want to read more.

    Excellent read

Truthful and entertaining and sad in many ways but a wonderful insight to life in the area, well worth reading.

A non political politician ... so far!

I'm not a great fan of autobiographies as I tend to think that anyone writing one must have a huge ego. I'm also not a fan of politicians. But this book was chosen by the book group I belong to so I read it ... and I'm glad I did. It's an easy read about a non-to easy early life populated by some good, strong, admirable people. It goes from birth to the age of 19 and fortunately Mr Johnson showed no interest in politics in that time. I'm assuming that there will be a follow-up book but, although I enjoyed this one, I won't bother with that.
