En México, el modelo de turismo sostenible fue propuesto por la Secretaría de Turismo en el Programa Sectorial de Turismo 2020-2024, en respuesta a los compromisos internacionales con la Agenda 2030 y los 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible.
