鄒平是中國山東省的一個縣，1930年代思想家梁漱溟等人在此開啟其鄉村建設實驗，半世紀之後，人類學者任柯安（Andrew B. Kipnis）以此地作為田野調查的場域，展開長達25年的社會轉型研究。自1988至2013年，任柯安定期造訪鄒平，從人類學的視角、理論、方法與實踐出發，見證了鄒平從一個3萬人口的農業縣城，蛻變成30多萬人口的繁榮城市。他提出了「重組」的概念，來闡釋鄒平這些年來的變化與轉型，並與既有的各種現代化理論相互參照，進而對話。在任柯安的觀察和論述中，重組意味著在社會變化的過程中，舊元素的循環和新元素的吸收同時發生，變是帶著過去的延續，而非邀進的斷裂。本書對於理解當代中國社會變遷，城鄉差距、移民機制、以及城鎮發展過程所面臨的挑戰，提供了啟發性的觀點；同時也對現代化理論的檢視與修正，做出了貢獻。
