Les ennemis littéraires de Ben-Jonson lui reprochaient souvent la lenteur de son travail. Il répondit par une comédie en cinq actes et en vers, conçue, écrite et représentée dans l’espace de cinq semaines. C’était Volpone ou le Renard. Représenté devant les collèges d’Oxford et de Cambridge, Volpone y obtint un succès d’enthousiasme, et quand Ben-Jonson l’imprima, sa reconnaissance lui dicta une longue dédicace — « À ces très nobles et très égales sœurs les deux fameuses Universités. »

Volpone – célibataire très riche sans héritier naturel – feint cyniquement d’être à l’article de la mort, ce qui a pour but d’attirer les prétendants à la succession. Le serviteur Mosca fait saliver l’avocat Voltore, le vieux gentilhomme Corbaccio et le jeune marchand Corvino devant la perspective de l’héritage. Corvino va jusqu’à offrir sa femme, Corbaccio déshérite son fils. Les choses se compliquent jusqu’à un dénouement moral dans le procès final où Volpone et Mosca sont démasqués.
