During the 1950s, Evelyn E. Smith regularly published science fiction in magazines like Galaxy and Fantastic Universe. Her stories ranged from post-apocalyptic satires to adventure to humor. She also wrote four science fiction novels, which chiefly deal with questions of gender identity. Like all of her work, they are characterized by their sharp wit. At her best, she was the equal of anyone -- male or female -- writing for the pulp magazines. This volume collects 12 of her short st...

But Miss Melville (who prefers the term "hitwoman") doesn't take just any job, no matter how w...

When you consider the varieties of people who will in all probability populate the near future the irrepressible George Gannett of this utterly delightful excursion into the star-bright realms of unorthodox fantasy should not too greatly surprise an Evelyn-Smith-enchanted-reader. Once these irritating farewells were over with, he could begin to live as he wished and as he’d dreamed.

These are the stories that helped Galaxy Magazine carve it's name on the Mount Rushmore of science fiction. The include: ‘Doorstep’ by Keith Laumer; ‘The Chas...

The gifting of animals with human speech is scarcely an unique idea; the idea of a talking horse goes back at least to the siege of Troy, for certainly there must have been some dialogue amongst the Greek warriors enclosed in the wooden horse’s belly. But we think you’ll agree that Miss Smith’s filly has something special. Incubus won every race but one. Yet though in this respect she matched Man o’ War’s record she wasn’t actually a horse at all.

Susan Melville, for example, was raised to marry well, but when the Melville millions went South, she turned to...let's call it freelance problem-solving in order to pay the rent. Bluntly?
