Meet Izzy Martchenko, voracious reader
Follow The Reader is our series featuring unconventional leaders and trailblazers.
5-year-old Isabella Martchenko read 750 books last year, raising nearly $6500 for MS research. She read the most books out of all the MS Read-a-thon participants, and raised the second-highest amount to help fund research and support for MS patients like her mom, Lindsey Martchenko.
This time around, Izzy’s aiming for just 250 books, many of which are longer, more challenging reads. Her donation goal this year is $6000.
MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. The immune system attacks nerve fibers and myelin sheathing (a fatty substance which surrounds/insulates healthy nerve fibers) in the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation. Symptoms may include extreme fatigue, lack of coordination, vision problems, and weakness, to name a few. Researchers are working to find the cause of MS, as well as develop better treatments and a cure.
Do you have a reading goal outside of the read-a-thon? How many books?
I don’t have a goal outside of the Read-A-Thon, I just read all the time! I read at least 2 books every day, but usually more. I want to read at least 60 books every month.
What’s your favourite book so far? (And why?)
I really like A Cuddle for Little Duck because I like the part where the duck sticks his tail up in the air and does a little wiggle! I started a new chapter book series that I like too because it’s about a princess kitty. It’s called Itty Bitty Princess Kitty and I borrow it from the library. I like it because they do a lot of exploring and they ride by cloud.
The best part of reading?
I like exploring the pictures that people make.
Do you like your Kobo Nia? What do you like about it?
I love my Kobo because it has so many books! It’s easier to just push a button and it turns the page for you. To this, Lindsey added, “Izzy uses the OverDrive app to borrow books from our local Stratford Public Library. We recently purchased a chapter book series that she’s working on called The Never Girls, which she loves. The other day we had to run some errands and I said 'Okay come on let’s go!’ and she said, ‘Aww but I haven’t had any time with my Kobo today!’ She’s really enjoying it!”
We heard you’re writing a book, The Very Good Egg. What’s it about?
It’s about an egg that was happy because he had a friend, but then he was sad because he lost his friend. But then he was happy again because he found a new friend! ◼
