The first article in this issue, Harold Bérubé’s “Selling the Suburbs to Montrealers: Advertising Discourse and Strategies, 1950–1970” is a revised translation of his 2017 article that appeared in the Revue d’histoire de l’Amérique française. This is the beginning of a collaboration between the JCHA and the RHAF to try to bridge the historiographic divide that linguistic boundaries produce in Canada.

Les trésors cachés - Our Hidden Treasures

Stories shape the world, imposing order on chaos, and the stories we tell declare: I exist. Neil Bissoondath presses these assertions about narrative further. Stories are also, he says, forms of confession. Each time we tell a story, we reveal a little about our experiences, dreams, fears, desires, and fantasies. Unlike governments, which try to control and simplify narrative, fiction writers use narrative expansively, for exploration and discovery. Questions are numerous; answers are rare...

Memories of May 68 charts the emergence of the conventional representation of the French events of 1968 and argues that the dominance of this narrative, despite its limitations, stems from the convenience that such a consensus provides for those that have been pivotal in shaping the collective memory of this critical moment in French history.
