为什么要做这样一本文集?《十月》本身就是一块难啃的骨头，独立出版又是一件纯投入而无经济回 报的苦活，为什么要自讨苦吃?其实这个决定相当偶然，我和李鑫第 一次见面聊起各自做的事，"影艺家"专注摄影理论，而"空白艺论" 侧重艺术批评，恰巧我们都在关注《十月》，所以一拍即合，那不如 做一本《十月》的摄影文集。最初，我们计划翻译 15 篇经典文本，后来在鲁明军老师的建议下 加入了更多新一代"《十月》学派"的文章，体量扩充至现在的 26 篇。 在这个过程中，又有更多的师友无偿加入我们的队伍，最终才有这本 文集的面世。如果只有我们两人，也许会做出一本《十月》文集，但 一定不是这一本，这五百多页的译文倾注了大家共同的兴趣、学识， 乃至某种理想。在今天，想要做一点非功利性的、纯学术的事情特别困难，抵抗 似乎变得不可能和毫无意义，但是，我们还在做。这本文集不仅是对《十 月》的致敬，也是不甘"内卷"和"躺平"的一种坚持，尽管微不足道， 终究聊胜于无。
